Texas Bluebonnet

State Birthday
February 19, 1846

The Texas Bluebonnet tartan was recognized as the official state tartan in 1989. Designed by June MacRoberts, under guidance from the Scottish Tartan Society Museum, this tartan was inspired by one of the most prominent symbols of Texas - bluebonnets, the official state flower. A member of the lupine family, which is widespread in many parts of Texas. the bluebonnet flower changes colour with the passing of time, the 'brim' becoming flecked with wine red. Texas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document signed by 59 delegates, settlers in Mexican Texas officially declared independence from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas. While the legal entry date of Texas into the United States was Dec. 29, 1845, authority to the new state of Texas was not given until Feb. 19, 1846.
