Curious and Unusual Tartans

Tartans are prized throughout the world not only for their instant recognizability, but for the myriad of color combinations, allowing a designer to imbue a tartan with colors and patterns that have special meaning.  

​

And with the advent of digital design,  tartan design is now accessible to everyone. 

 

The Scottish Register of Tartans was established by an act of Scottish Parliament in 2008, to protect, promote and preserve tartan. 
 

Within this registry, there are quite a few unusual tartans that are officially registered.  

 

This site is dedicated to them.  

 

 

The Red Thistle Dancers

This site was inspired by The Red Thistle Dancers, a Scottish Country and Highland Dance performance group based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, who wear a variety of tartans in their performances.
