Sister Cities Day

“Friendship is the golden thread that ties the heart of all the world.”

Happy Twin or Sister Cities Day! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ❤️ 🇺🇸

The "Twinned in Tartan" tartan was commissioned by Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow to celebrate the new twinning of Glasgow and Boston, Massachusetts. This particular civic friendship received a considerable nudge from this year's FIFA World Cup!

Boston was one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and when Scotland came to town, the Tartan Army came with it! Thousands of travelling Scottish supporters filled the city with tartan, song and good humour, enthusiastically embracing Boston life and creating a memorable meeting of Scottish and American sporting cultures.

These two cities already had plenty in common. Glasgow and Boston are historic North Atlantic cities with centuries of connections across the ocean, shaped by migration, trade, education and culture. In June 2026, Boston signed a letter of intent to establish an official sister-city relationship with Glasgow, with the formal twinning ceremony planned for April 2027.

The Twinned in Tartan design brings the two cities together in its colours. Its palette draws inspiration from the flags of Glasgow and Boston, while the green introduces a particularly Bostonian touch—the famous Green Monster, the towering left-field wall at Fenway Park. It is a playful nod to Boston's sporting heritage and seems especially appropriate for a friendship that was itself strengthened through sport.

Glasgow and Boston are certainly not alone in reaching across the Atlantic. Scotland and the United States have some wonderful twin and sister-city connections: Edinburgh and San Diego, California; Dundee and Alexandria, Virginia; Dunfermline and Sarasota, Florida; Blairgowrie & Rattray and Pleasanton, California; Prestwick and Vandalia, Ohio; and Stornoway and Pendleton, South Carolina. Some of these friendships have now lasted for more than half a century, encouraging everything from cultural and educational exchanges to visits, festivals and lasting personal friendships.

And then there is perhaps the most irresistible Scottish-American pairing of all: Dull, Perthshire, and Boring, Oregon! They aren't technically sister cities, but have been officially paired as a “Pair for the Ages” since 2012.

Does your town or city have a twin or sister city somewhere in the world—and if so, where? 💙 💚 🤍 💛 💗 🖤 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇺🇸

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, tens of thousands of Scotland supporters descended on Boston and the surrounding area, bringing kilts, pipes, songs, good humour—and the irrepressible spirit of the Tartan Army. What began as a football visit quickly became something rather more lasting, as Glaswegians and Bostonians discovered just how much the two cities have in common.

In June, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu signed a formal Declaration of Intent to establish Glasgow as Boston's newest sister city. The two cities are now working toward a full Sister City Agreement, which is expected to be formally concluded during Tartan Week in April 2027, when representatives from Glasgow are due to visit Boston.

And this is intended to be much more than a ceremonial twinning. Glasgow and Boston plan to develop practical links in economic development, education and workforce training, research and innovation, arts and culture, tourism, sustainability, public health and major international events. Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken has described the modern approach to twinning as one based on genuine exchange, learning and mutual benefit.

Rather wonderfully, then, a friendship sparked by football, tartan and the Tartan Army's unforgettable takeover of Boston is set to become an official relationship between two cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

From “No Scotland, No Party” to “Glasgow and Boston: Sister Cities.” Not a bad legacy for a World Cup visit!
