Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah! College football season is in full swing, and some universities show their school spirit in tartan! Among the newest designs is a rare purple plaid celebrating the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University, honoring both their athletic pride and their one-of-a-kind mascot!
In the spring of 2018, the provost of the university envisioned an official university tartan. Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising senior Aimee Hibler created six unique designs, which were put to a vote among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The winning choice—woven in the university’s proud purple and white—became the official TCU tartan, a distinctive symbol of school spirit and tradition.
TCU’s Horned Frogs represent not only the football team but also a wide range of athletics—basketball, baseball, volleyball, golf, cross-country, swimming and diving, rifle, track and field, and more. Their unusual nickname and mascot, the “Horned Frog,” actually refers to the Texas horned lizard, a fierce little creature known for its dramatic defense mechanism of shooting blood from its eyes!
With this vibrant tartan, storied traditions, and fearless mascot, the Horned Frogs bring plenty of flair to the season. Good golly—Go Frogs, Go! 💜 🤍 💜 🦎 🐸 🐸 🐸 🏈
In the spring of 2018, Provost R Nowell Donovan had a vision for an official Texas Christian University (TCU) tartan. Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising senior Aimee Hibler designed six unique tartan options that were voted upon by TCU students, faculty, staff and alumni with this design being the winner. The design uses the University ’s colours.
