World Soil Day

"If I wanted to have a happy garden, I must ally myself with my soil; study and help it to the utmost, untiringly. Always, the soil must come first."

~ Marion Cran, If I Were Beginning Again

Gardeners and farmers take note! Here’s a tartan for those who like to get their hands dirty. This design pays tribute to an essential element of life—our soil. Created to celebrate the British Society of Soil Science hosting the World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow in 2022, its colourways honour both the many constituents of a soil ecosystem and the diverse areas of specialization within soil science: microbiology, pedology, edaphology, physics, and chemistry.

Interestingly, soil is not the same as dirt. Dirt is an inorganic material made from broken-down rocks and is composed primarily of minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. Soil, by contrast, is a rich blend of dirt, water, air, and organic material. It is the living layer that occupies the space between the atmosphere and bedrock.

Soil is considered a living system—one that is absolutely teeming with life. A single tablespoon of healthy soil contains more organisms than there are people on Earth, and yet only about 1% of soil micro-organism species have been identified. So look kindly on earthworms and all their soily brethren. 💚 💜 🖤 🤍 🤎 💛 🌎 👨‍🌾 👩‍🌾 🪱 🐛 🐌 🐞 🍂 🌱 💧 🦠 🍄
