"🎶 Sunrise and dreams
Sunrise, sunrise and dreams of you
Castles in the sand
For one lonely man
Dreams of you
Memories and dreams of you, of you
Sandcastles, Sandcastles, Sandcastles ..."
~ "Sandcastles", Dream after Dream, Journey (1980)
Are you in a seashore state of mind - dreaming of waves crashing on the shore, cool salt breezes, and the warmth of sun-baked sand beneath your feet? This tartan was designed to capture memories of sandcastles long reclaimed by the sea, with sandy tones recalling the mix of multi-coloured grains of sands, carefully sculpted by small hands into towers and turrets, while the blues and indigos echo the wide skies and the steady pull and crash of the tide.
If it’s summertime where you are, you might even stumble upon a sand sculpture contest. Sand sculpting, the oldest form of sculpting in the world, reaches back to prehistoric times and continues today with over 20 major competitions held across the globe, alongside countless local festivals and beachside gatherings.
So, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself by the sea, why not reclaim those childhood joys? Take up a bucket and shovel, shape your turrets, decorate with seashells, and of course—don’t forget the moat! 💙 🖤 🤎 💛 🏰 🏰 🏰 🌊 🏖️ ☀️ 🐚
By designer Carol A.L. Martin, this tartan uses the colours of sandy beaches and ocean surf.
Sand sculpture is an art which dates back thousands of years and is a favourite seaside past time. However, for general entertainment, according to Sand Castle Central, the first people to make a profit from sand sculpting as an established art form came from Atlantic City in the late nineteenth century. Spectators treading the boardwalk would throw tips to artists as they moulded the sculpted their sandy creations. Some believe the first true sand sculpture was produced by Philip McCord in 1897, in the macabre form of a drowned mother and baby.
Today, sand castle and sand sculpture contests are held all over the world. Click the castle for a photo gallery of some amazing castles!
