Golden Gate Bridge Day

Designed with the colours of the San Francisco 49ers Football Team, this tartan inherits its colour inspiration from the team's original logo, a mustachioed gold miner referencing the 1849 California Gold Rush. Dressed in plaid pants and a red shirt and jumping in midair with his hat falling off, this "49er" was depicted firing pistols in each hand: one nearly shooting his foot, and the other pistol forming the word "Forty-Niners" from its smoke! The Scarlet Red and Metallic gold are perfect complements to the sunset colors of the Golden Gate Bridge, which opened to traffic this day in 1937. The official color of the bridge is an orange vermilion called International Orange, specially selected by consulting architect Irving Morrow to complement the natural surroundings and to enhance the bridge's Art Deco visibility in the famous San Francisco fog! 🏈 🌉
Today marks the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge May 27, 1937.
First proposed in 1872, three years after the completion of the transcontinental railroad, Charles Crocker, a railroad executive, made a presentation to the Marin County Board of Supervisors in which he laid out plans for a bridge that would span the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance to the ocean from San Francisco Bay.
The strait was originally named Chrysopylae, Greek for “golden gate,” by U.S. Army Captain John Fremont in 1846.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the city of San Francisco, California – the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula – to Marin County.
One of the most photographed bridges in the world, its color is officially an orange vermilion called international orange. The color was selected by consulting architect Irving Morrow because it complements the natural surroundings and enhances the bridge's visibility in fog.
It took a little over four years to build the bridge, and the total cost of the project was $35 million. When the bridge was completed, San Francisco feted it for a solid week.
The tartan was commissioned for the World Whisky Expo in San Francisco and designed in the colours of the San Francisco 49ers NFL football team (whose namesake is based on gold miners from the 1849 Gold Rush) "for citizens of San Francisco and those associated with San Francisco."
