In remembrance of the fallen, in gratitude to those who served, and in honor of all who continue to answer the call.
The Firefighter’s Memorial Tartan was designed as a heartfelt tribute to the courage, service, and sacrifice of firefighters, with particular remembrance of those who responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
On that day, firefighters and other first responders entered burning and damaged buildings while thousands of people were trying to escape. 343 members of the FDNY were killed on September 11, and many more firefighters and rescue and recovery workers later suffered illnesses associated with their work at the World Trade Center site. Their courage, and the losses borne by their families, colleagues, and firehouse communities, remain an enduring part of the story of 9/11.
The Firefighter’s Memorial Tartan is one of several tartans created in remembrance of September 11 and those whose lives were forever changed by it. Woven into cloth rather than carved into stone, a memorial tartan serves much the same purpose as a monument: it preserves memory and gives people something tangible through which to honor service, sacrifice, and community.
Across the United States, memorials now preserve the names and stories of the firefighters who died. At the National September 11 Memorial in New York, the names of those killed are inscribed in bronze around the footprints of the Twin Towers, including the firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives. Firehouses, local communities, and firefighter organizations have also created monuments and memorials throughout the country, many incorporating pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
The tartan carries that remembrance in another uniquely meaningful form. It honors not only those who died, but the wider firefighter community—the men and women who answered the call that morning, those who worked through the long rescue and recovery effort that followed, and firefighters everywhere who continue a tradition of service in which helping others can require extraordinary personal courage.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Firefighter’s Memorial Tartan also supports firefighter charities, allowing the tartan to be more than a symbol of remembrance: it becomes a continuing gesture of gratitude and support for the firefighting community. ❤️ 🖤 🤍 🎗️🎗️ 🎗️
Notes from the Scottish Register of Tartans:
Designed as a salute to firefighters everywhere in the world, who are ready to sacrifice their lives every day for the protection of others. It was designed to memorialize those firefighters who have already made the ultimate sacrifice. The red background represents fire and the fire trucks. Black is in remembrance of those who have fallen in the line of duty. Green and gold represent the Irish community which has strong ties with the organization and the fire fighting occupation. Lastly, the three red lines in the middle of each square are 3 red threads, 4 red threads and three red threads - representing the 343 NYFD firefighters who lost their lives on 11th September 2001 - the largest number of firefighters who ever perished in a single day in the history of the United States. A portion of all sales of this tartan will be donated to Firefighters' charities.
