Cinnamon Bun Day

"Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure"

~ The Onion

Warm, buttery, gooey, cinnamon rolls or buns are a favorite sweet roll in North America and northern Europe. In fact, Cinnamon Roll Day (Kanelbullens dag) is an annual secular holiday in Sweden and Finland. In Denmark, these sweet rolls are known as kanelsnegl (cinnamon snails). Regardless of name and regional variations, the Cinnamon Bun became the subject of an internet meme in 2014 after the publication of a satirical article in The Onion titled "Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure" to describe an adorable, charismatic or otherwise sympathetic fictional character, who faces trials and tribulations in their (fictional lives), despite their inherent goodness. 🥐

By designer Carol A.L. Martin, and inspired by her local bakery, this tartan represents a favorite treat, the cinnamon bun or the sticky bun!

Originating in Sweden and Denmark,  the cinnamon bun (also cinnamon roll, cinnamon swirl, and cinnamon snail) is a sweet roll served commonly in Northern Europe and North America.

In Denmark, it is known as Kanelsnegl (cinnamon snail) and is a form of wienerbrød ('Vienna Bread').

In Sweden, the cinnamon roll takes the name of kanelbulle (literally 'cinnamon bun').  Swedish kanelbulle dough typically also contains cardamom, giving it a distinctive flavour.

October 4 has been promoted as 'kanelbullens dag' (Cinnamon Roll Day).

Interestingly, the Cinnamon Bun became the subject of an internet meme in 2014 after the publication of a satirical article in The Onion titled "Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure" which became a catchphrase still in existence describing adorable, charismatic or otherwise sympathetic fictional characters, who face trials and tribulations in their (fictional lives), despite their inherent goodness.

The Onion's article began:

"Citing the pastry’s sublime, inviting aroma and the alluring glint reflecting off its glaze, sources confirmed Thursday that a beautiful cinnamon roll was simply too pure for this world, too perfect. “Look at this angelic confection. Never in my life have I laid eyes on such an immaculate swirl, nor glimpsed a crust as delectably golden brown in hue,” exclaimed bakery customer Kristen Garding before realizing that perhaps such a flawless, delicate work of art was not meant for this earthly realm. “Alas, we toil in far too cold and dark a world for such cinnamoned purity as this, such perfection, whose rich, buttery brilliance conjures the divine.” As of press time, the cinnamon roll had been purchased along with a medium cup of coffee."

The meme itself has even inspired social commentary by pundits concerned about implicit bias in its application.
