“Bruadar mòr” - I Have a Dream, Scotland '26
Are you part of the "Tartan Army"?
After 28 years away, Scotland is heading back to the FIFA World Cup, and this new tartan, Caledonia Dreamin', was created to celebrate the occasion. The FIFA World Cup is football's premier international tournament, bringing together nations from around the globe every four years. The 2026 competition will be the largest in the tournament's history, featuring 48 teams and taking place across Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 through July 19.
Designed to capture the excitement of Scotland's return to the world stage, Caledonia Dreamin' weaves together colours inspired by the national team's traditional navy, red, and white, with touches of yellow and pink drawn from the historic Rosebery colours once worn by Scotland's national football team. Long before dark blue became firmly established, Scotland occasionally played in the primrose and rose colours associated with the Earl of Rosebery, an early patron of Scottish football. The result is a tartan that honours both the deep history of the game and the hopes of a new generation of supporters.
For many supporters, Scotland's World Cup story is woven from equal measures of pride, perseverance, and hope. From Argentina in 1978 to France in 1998, generations of fans followed the team across continents, creating memories that remain part of football folklore. Through triumphs, disappointments, and nearly three decades of waiting, the Tartan Army has remained one of the most loyal and colourful groups of supporters in world sport. World Cup fever is heating up! Dream Big! ❤️ 💙 ❤️ 🤍 💛 💗 🏴 ⚽ ⚽ ⚽
After a 28-year absence, Scotland returns to the world stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It marks the nation's ninth appearance at the tournament and rekindles a story filled with passion, memorable moments, and more than a little heartbreak.
Scotland first qualified for the World Cup in 1954 and returned again in 1958, but it was during the 1970s and 1980s that the national team enjoyed its greatest period of success, qualifying for five consecutive tournaments between 1974 and 1990. Despite producing talented squads and several memorable performances, Scotland repeatedly fell just short of reaching the knockout rounds.
One of the most famous campaigns came in 1974, when Scotland went unbeaten against Brazil, Yugoslavia, and Zaire, yet were eliminated on goal difference without losing a match. Four years later, at Argentina 1978, Archie Gemmill scored one of the greatest goals in World Cup history during Scotland's memorable 3–2 victory over the Netherlands. Unfortunately, the Scots again missed advancing by the narrowest of margins.
Scotland also appeared at the World Cups of 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1998, often leaving supporters wondering what might have been. Following their appearance in France in 1998, the nation endured a 28-year wait before finally securing qualification for 2026.
Throughout those years, the loyal "Tartan Army" remained one of football's most admired and colorful groups of supporters, following Scotland through triumphs, disappointments, and near misses. As the team heads to North America for the 2026 tournament, a new chapter begins—and Scottish fans will once again dare to dream.
