The Rocky Horror Picture Show

"🎶 It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight

Let's do the Time Warp again
Let's do the Time Warp again!"

~ The Time Warp, Richard O'Brien/Patricia Quinn/Nell Campbell/Charles Gray, 1973

Retro movie theater interactive fan fun, anyone? Pack the bag of rice and kilt up in tartan tribute (fishnet stockings and platform heels optional) for your next Rocky Horror Picture Show party! Still in limited release decades after its premiere, The Rocky Horror Picture Show holds the record as the longest-running theatrical release in film history.

The cult classic began as a stage production in 1973 before making its silver-screen debut in 1975, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and Meatloaf. Ironically, the vivid colours of this tartan are based on the bow tie and cummerbund worn by the buttoned-up Brad Majors—whose world, along with his fiancée Janet, is turned upside down by the outrageous antics of Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia, and Dr. Frank N. Furter!

And speaking of a time warp - there’s a tartan mystery associated with this bit of cinematic esoterica. This design is a modern tribute, carefully recreated to match the look of the tartan tie and cummerbund worn by the character of Brad Majors. The original on-screen pattern remains unidentified, eluding even dedicated tartan sleuths. Was it a fashion version of a commonly available sett? We invite sharp-eyed readers and tartan enthusiasts to join the hunt—do you recognise this elusive piece of textile history? ❤️ 💙 💛 🖤 👄 👄 👄 🍿 🎥 😜

"Let's do the Time Warp again ... !"

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 British-American musical comedy horror film, which premiered in the UK August 14th with a later USA release on September 25th, directed by Jim Sharman. Although largely critically panned on release, it soon became known as the midnight movie when audiences began returning to participate with the film at the Waverly Theater in New York City the following year.

The audience participation trend continues to this day, with audience members dressing as characters, dancing the Time Warp along with the film, shouting rejoinders at key points in the film, and throwing toast, water, toilet paper, hot dogs, and rice at appropriate points in the movie.

This time-warp tartan was designed as an attempted re-creation of the pattern used for Brad Majors' bow tie in the film.

Still in limited release nearly four decades after its premiere, the film has a large international following and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2005.

A criminologist narrates the tale of the newly engaged couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss who find themselves lost and with a flat tire on a cold and rainy late November evening. Seeking a telephone, the couple walk to a nearby castle where they discover a group of strange characters holding an Annual Transylvanian Convention.
