The Yellowhammer State

"Audemus jura nostra defendere" (We dare defend our rights)

Alabama (Provisional)

State Birthday
December 14, 1819

The five white stripes represent the region's first flag - the Bonnie Blue Flag which comprised a white, five pointed star on a blue background which was later adopted by Texas (the 'Lone Star State') and which became an unofficial flag of the Confederate States of America. The azure is for the State's clear blue skies, the navy the splendour of the Gulf waters and the grey the state's Confederate heritage while the combination of crimson, white and blue celebrates the State's inclusion in the Union. The bright crimson stripe flanked by the white represents the official State flag - the crimson saltire.
