Outlander is a British-American television drama series based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. The show premiered in 2014 with Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse in 1945 who finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743, where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.
Outlander (published in the United Kingdom as Cross Stitch) is the first in a series of eight historical multi-genre novels by Diana Gabaldon published in 1991. A mix of several genres, the Outlander series features elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and science fiction/fantasy.
One of several different tartans created for the television series, this tartan uses ancient and weathered colours to simulate the natural wools and dyes available in the time period of the story.
