Gluten-free and Celiac Awareness Day
"Oh my beloved Cinnabon, how I miss thee,
Now that I must eat
All my food gluten-free."
~ Ode to Gluten
Fear not! There are plenty of gluten-free Cinnabon recipes should you wish! Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and related species of grains. Gluten gives traditional bread its unique texture and helps dough rise by trapping gas bubbles during yeast fermentation. For people with celiac disease and for other reasons, many people choose to avoid gluten in their diet and personal products. Gluten is often unexpectedly present in foods such as beer or soy sauce and is sometimes used as a stabilizing agent in ice creams, ketchups, and other foods. Gluten may also be present in cosmetics, hair products, and other dermatological preparations! If you are a member of Clan Glufree, this fruit and vegetable coloured tartan was designed to help spread awareness of the reasons for and challenges of a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. 🌿 🥕 🍅 🌽
It's Celiac Awareness Day!
Gluten is a naturally occurring protein composite found primarily in wheat, rye and barley and related species. Corn, rice and certain types of oats do not contain gluten as well as other grains such as amaranth, buckwheat, rice (brown, white, wild), millet, quinoa, sorghum, and teff.
Many people choose to remove gluten-containing foods and products from their diet and use for general health reasons while others with Celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine) must avoid gluten completely.
This fashion tartan was designed to represent those who maintain a gluten free diet.
Founded by businessman Jonathan Brill and Edinburgh restaurateur, Lucy Balloch, following a chance conversation, Clan Gluten Free aims to build a community. In 2016, Clan Gluten Free hosted their first ever gluten-free Burns Supper at the Roamin’ Nose in Edinburgh. Guests were treated to a warming dram upon arrival, traditional Scottish music in the background, and a delightful, entirely gluten-free, three-course Burns supper.
The colors in the Glufree tartan represent the fresh vibrant food choices available of non-gluten food choices.
